laze.net is where I write about things that interest me. Try not to be shocked at the level of innovation! The site's history goes all the way back to December of 1994 when I launched a personal home page on my college's web server. It was only the second student site on the server and would eventually go on to eclipse the college's main page in terms of traffic. It also drew the ire of a politician in Richmond because I linked to "The Butt Page."

Watching movies at home in the mid-1980s, one had a few choices: Broadcast TV. Premium cable channels like HBO, Cinemax, or PRISM for movies a year or older; Expensive pay-per-view (or as I remember it being branded in the greater Philly...
We’ve been dealing with a sick bunny around the house this past week. Rabbits have fragile systems and can go from “OK” to “really bad news” quickly, so it’s important (and, at times, exhausting) to stay on top of things when they come...
I seem to be settling into an every-other-week cadence with these weeknotes. I don’t think that’s a permanent thing, but I’m glad I gave myself the space to do these at indeterminate intervals. On Tuesday, I started my 22nd year of...
Google has gone from the de facto search engine to mediocre, at best, and unusable at worst. Small, focused search engines are fun and useful in certain situations, but not as defaults. Kagi is neat, but let’s be real, it’s unlikely I’m...
Life Notes I had a birthday and have officially made it to a half-century. I took the day off, went hiking with H up at Gambrill State Park in Maryland, had a nice lunch, did some record shopping, visited a pet cemetery, and saw a...
Human cemeteries are fascinating. no question. We try to infer stories about people’s entire lives from just the information on the gravestones. We make assumptions about cause of death based on the date they died. We quietly mourn...
Ten years ago I had some thoughts on turning 40. Now I’m at the next milestone birthday with a few more thoughts to share. A lot of life has happened in ten years. Let’s start with some birthday facts: Fifty years ago today, it was a...
Weeknote #14. Too lazy to try and rhyme “fourteen.” Life Notes Last weekend I ran a half-marathon in West Virginia. The weather was beautiful, the vibes were nice, and I ran it faster than I expected to. Not a bad way to spend the...
I kicked around several ideas about how to approach this post. It was initially going to be a standard “how I listen to music in 2025” post where I talked about how I’m trying to bring some variety back, going beyond just streaming. I...
I always wanted to be a person that ran. I was a fast kid, always at the top of elementary school gym class in the 50-yard dash and a frequent base stealer in my Little League days. But I never actually, really ran. I joined track in...
Weeknote #13, I’mma pluck ‘em, yay. This had to be his most, unlucky lucky day. Life Notes This was one of those weeks that felt two months long. But, hey, we made it! Some Links Worth Sharing How to Be a Good Literary Citizen (in Seven...
Monday is the day that every individual vague worry awakens from slumber, rising up like a horde of zombies to consume our braaaaiiiiiins.
Weeknote #12, how deeply will you delve? Or will you put it back on the shel… ve? Life Notes As the end of summer wound down and we officially entered into autumn, the fam travelled to NJ to celebrate my dad’s 80th birthday. It was nice...
After watching John Green’s video on not taking his meds, I was struck by the phrase “data is not the plural of anecdote.” I really liked it and Googled a bit to find out where that phrase came from and was surprised to find out that it...
