tuhat.net

tuhat: Finnish for one thousand is a platform for long-form writing. No threads, no microblogging, no hot takes. Originally posts had to be at least 1,000 words to be posted, although as new languages were added and use cases considered that was eventually dropped. Even still, tuhat remains a home for considered writing, regardless of ultimate length.

Every voice should be heardI typically create in fits and starts, hacking together an idea up to 80% completion and then walking away. Sometimes for a few days, sometimes months, or in this case, years. In part this is a necessary part of the creative process. The best advice if you are stuck on a problem is to go...

Heute früh saßen wir in der Küche, das Radio lief ganz leise auf hr4. Meine Mutter rührte in ihrer Kaffeetasse.

Before we get to any actual story content, a quick note. As I mentioned in Hello Worlds, I wrote a few books back in the ‘90s. Those were the days of dial-up internet—AOL, CompuServe, PowerPCs running Mac OS 8, and Windows 95/NT 4. For my first two books, I used FrameMaker on the Mac, paired with a fancy grayscale...

It is time for the faithful to take back their churches from the usurper priests and pastors who divide and disempower the congregation. Its time to stop the state from shifting power, control and resources to subjects at the expense of the church, and this with the complicity of the ecclesiastical authorities. It...

Start with Chapter 1.Calliope felt the restraints before she even opened her eyes. Without being fully awake, she screamed, or thought she did. Then she heard a gentle female voice over her scream, “Shhhh…do not be afraid. You are safe. You are safe. You are safe.” She didn’t believe it. How could she be safe and...

Most mornings begin with the mind taking the lead. Thoughts about the day ahead, messages waiting for attention, unfinished tasks, and plans for the hours to come arrive quickly — often before you have fully opened your eyes or left the bed. The mental activity starts immediately, and the body follows behind....

Naples, and the Void (Part IV)Somewhere along the coast, I lost the void.Could be she recognized itself from one of the cliffs that opened toward the glittering sea and leapt to embrace it.Only this time, she didn’t sink. She hovered in the cold wet December air, weaving through the curves and splitting into photons...

Tom sat huddled in his chair, wrapped in his favorite blanket, and held the open book tightly. Behind him, the floor lamp, which had been exclusively chosen as a reading lamp, cast its gentle beam of light on every word. It was autumn, and outside, it was already pitch-dark, damp, and cool. The rain pounded heavily...

Both the work computer and the personal computer were switched off, and the lab would have been perfectly silent if it weren’t for the lung sacs on the walls still rattling, though with less effort than in the morning. Another element breaking the silence was Donny’s warm, baritonal voice as he sat reading aloud:...

Located in southern Beijing, the Temple of Heaven is one of the most remarkable imperial architectural complexes in China and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Originally built during the Ming Dynasty and later expanded in the Qing Dynasty, it served as the sacred place where emperors worshipped heaven and prayed for...
