Finished reading my 16th book of 2025. Some of my favorite quotes from Kingdom of Ash by Sarah J. Maas
In-person events are good. I have missed them. Last week was the reboot of LoopConf – an independent tech conference for WordPress developers. It was excellent, and it was an honour to be speaking. Here’s some thoughts on the event and my talk. Update: My talk is now available to watch on YouTube! An invitation to...
A review of the Kobo Libra Colour, which I think is Good Enough
Tim Bray writes, on Mastodon, I think correctly: The canceling of ICEBlock is more evidence, were any needed, that the Web is the platform of the future, the only platform without a controlling vendor. Anything controversial should be available through a pure browser interface. This is not the first time I’ve had...
Happy hacking
The 9th post of My Top Tracks I was depressed as a teenager. Who wasn't? There were probably some hormones going around. But for me it was mainly about society and circumstances. I lived in a suburban-feeling small town where most people seemed most concerned about having a neatly clipped lawn and a spotless clean...
People hated meetings and phone calls and even answering machines so our current world of short text messages is one we strived for years in order to finally build. People hated reading books, too, that was for eggheads and nerds. So boring. And even watching TV was boring. Even after they made 500 channels the meme...
Read on the website: Threading macros make Lisp-family languages much more readable. Other languages too, potentially! Except… other languages don’t have macros. How do we go about enabling threading “macros” there?
More updates have happened on the blog. I have a new “link” post type, that will allow me to share links to things I find interesting. This was fun to set up, and took a fair bit of doing. I wanted it to appear in the main hugo feed, and I wanted the posts to appear a bit different. At first, I thought about having...
The nations that had instituted spaceflight had done so largely for nationalistic reasons; it was a small irony that almost everyone who entered space received a startling glimpse of a transnational perspective, of the Earth as one world. It humble us.
I was here for a conference in last May 2025, walking around looking for the place of SD and AC. They are a nice couple and their kids are amazing. Due to financial issues, after finishing my PhD, I could not stay at hotel. SD and AC saved me from this trouble and hosted me at their home. I spent three lovely days...
Took a dip this afternoon in some last gasps of pool weather season. That evening we’d hit the theater to see the 1997 Japanese anime Perfect Blue. This was Casey’s pick since I forced him to see the Taylor Swift record release party the night before. It’s not every day you see an animated psychological thriller...
ವಿಶ್ವ ಮಾನವ first appeared on...
'Universities are teaching English Literature students how to concentrate long enough to read lengthy novels. Some institutions are offering "reading resilience" courses to students...' So begins a news story in The Times, the rest of which is unfortunately concealed behind a paywall, but I think we get the gist:...
In this ~2.5-hour video, I talk to Christian Tietze about a wide range of topics, from his indie and freelancing programming, to topics of practical philosophy, and ultimately to note-taking with the Zettelkasten method. I have known Christian from the Emacs community, having interacted with him on several issue...
Listen to The Cruelty of Many, The Grace of One Mood: Like a found object, after being lost for a very long time. Some days, the world is a conspiracy of sharp edges. Today was one of those days. It started with my two hours of sleep. I didn't get sleep last night because my neighbor decided she would blast country...
hashcards is a local-first spaced repetition app, along the lines of Anki or Mochi. Like Anki, it uses FSRS, the most advanced scheduling algorithm yet, to schedule reviews. The thing that makes hashcards unique: it doesn’t use a database. Rather, your flashcard collection is just a directory of Markdown files, like...
I had a really long experiment session with Claude today to see if there were other abstractions and functional programming ideas that I could tap into, to make my game model succinct. Many ideas floated around — MTL (monad-transformers), effect libraries, Free monad etc. I picked the Free monad path and tried to...
Estoy viendo la temporada actual de The Morning Show.

Previously. aws_china_mfa: A script to authenticate to AWS China using MFA and export temporary session credentials. The idea is simple. To log into AWS, we need the following environment variables to be defined: export AWS_PROFILE='china' export AWS_ACCESS_KEY_ID='AKIAWHEATLICIOUSPANCAK' export...
September 2025. Stockport. We met Blackpool Jane at Piccadilly and headed for Stockport, after dashing back down to the metro to tap out. Why do all forms of public transport have different rules on tickets tapping ? Plans to finally try curry at the Pyramid had been scaled back on the realisation that none of…...
