Read time: 4 minutes. 927 Words I'm old enough to have seen the Internet become a thing. From the early days (for me) of simple emails and web pages, and squealing dial-up modems connecting to the web, to what we have now. Over that time things have gotten much more complex, useful, pleasing, and fast. We now have...

So anyone who has spent considerable time with me has probably learned how much I love a drive in movie theater. Crysta and I started going to them when we lived in Indiana, mostly visiting the Lakeshore Drive In in Monticello (though the now-closed MELS at the Starlight in Mechanicsburg was in our rotation too)....

I mostly spend this week up in Cologne. A bunch of in-person meetings, a bit of hanging out with friends and coworkers, good (and some not so good) food and the days went by very quickly. For the first time in quite some while I took the train instead of driving and frankly ā when it works and once youāre in the...
This is the sort of book I usually hate. By law books about writing are so desperate to explain the world to me that I struggle to keep my eyes open. I donāt have much patience when I feel someoneās talking down to me, with them having figured the universe out already. Isnāt it always more exciting when a writer is...
Whenever there is a will, there are two things: a way and an obstacle in the way ā that place midway between desire and destination where oneās will collides with the will of the world, with the parameters of permission for imagination we call reality. The triumph of life is turning that collision into a particle...
I am currently in the process of migrating to a new mailserver setup that is integrated into my normal hosting setup on a new VPS at netcup. This time, the setup is based on the Docker images and configuration from a project called docker-mailserver (I previously used the other more popular docker-mailserver). Itās...
Representatives from the United States and Iran are already meeting in Switzerland to agree on a permanent end to the war. Many important details remain unknown, though the way things are set is already giving us an indication of what to expect. Both sides can claim victory. Though it is only a Pyrrhic one: another...

I lived a relatively standard life for a long time. Then I went independent, had a taste of success, then failed and moved home into my dad's. My mental health had been bad for sometime, had been declining for some time. But then I opted out of work & most productivity for a few years. Then in 2018 I became...

Iāve heard this claim now really often: at conferences, in keynotes, even in casual conversations: āWith AI, weāll soon only need to work two or three days a week.ā The narrative is seductive, I admit: technology will finally liberate us from the grind, freeing up time for creativity, family, leisure, hobbies ā who...
Life Notes Jack had his Nursery Graduation on Friday, cape, tasseled mortarboard and all. I still feel a bit emotional about it, a milestone and all that. He is still very much not into participation and performing though, which is a-ok because neither is his Dad! Scotland vs Morocco was excruciating to watch. At...
ā¦was the day I finally stopped over-optimising my plain text lists Moving my tasks away from apps to plain text lists was supposed to simplify everything. To take the pressure off. So why have I spent so many years optimising them? Because I didnāt understand the job they did best. Every task manager does these 3...

Luckily it was too warm to sleep last night, as I'm not sure I would have made the effort to go see these storms otherwise. These are distant thunderstorms near Lille in France. That's at least 150 miles to my South East, so I'm quite amazed the skies were clear enough to capture some distant lightning. I was...
So, awhile back, I decided to start self hosting my music collection. Iām sure Iāve at least mentioned it somewhere here on the blog. I re-downloaded my entire collection and more beyond that. Nearly 5TB of new music was stored on my various hard drives. It took months. And by the end, I was pretty damn proud of it....
Whatās your top tip to be successful in life? Okay, WordPress. Slow down. I mean, people love asking this question because they expect some profound answer. Wake up at 4:30 a.m. Manifest abundance. 2026-06-21Hello! My camera is still out of order, and I'm still cleaning up my photography files.I'm also trying to get over the fact that internet strangers are outnumbering people I know in my readership audience. The Brooklyn Bridge most New Yorkers know is a slender wonder of steel wires, stone towers, and sweeping views. But thereās a less visible part of the bridge at ground level. These are the anchoragesāthe masonry structures on both the Manhattan and Brooklyn sides that secure the cables supporting the bridge while...
Before I say anything, Iād recommend you just visit the site of a new little app called Liquid Radius, click around, and see how you feel (donāt install it, though!): So. June 21, 2026 I saved a guide called npm: A Free Guide for Beginners to GoodLinks the other day. This morning, I wanted to read it and keep it for future reference, but I realized GoodLinks isn't where I want to store this kind of material. I briefly thought about DEVONthink, but since I uninstalled it recently, it...
Iām disappointed that Iām missing the 2026 UK heatwave; donāt get many of those, do you ? Meanwhile in Yerevan; Oh. Not-so-fat Bike Winter was a total bust. We barely had any snow down in town. So little that I questioned whether I should bother with a fat bike any more, if winters were going to be like this. But we also have plenty of sand here. I love riding the shoreline of Washoe Lake in the winter so a bike that can traverse...

This is the third China MiĆ©ville novel Iāve read, behind The City and the City and Railsea. One thing I really like about MiĆ©villeās work is that he manages to make every novel so different from the others, and all so very good. Embassytown continues his streak, though it does have some parallels with The City and...
If you donāt speak French, you might never have heard of the AZERTY keyboard ā the weird cousin of QWERTY with its shifted number row and a scattering of accented letters across the board.
