I've been wondering lately if I should start a second blog for all my writings about technology and nerdy things. This blog is all over the place topic-wise on purpose. I figured I could just write about whatever I felt like and the Topics page and the hashtags would allow folks to follow the topics they were...
I have posted on the contribution I made to my dad's funeral in September 2026. Here is what my children, his grandchildren, said at the same service. Katie I feel very lucky to have had my grandfather in my life, and especially lucky to have known him not only as a grandparent, but as someone whose values,...
Just imagine that some people would come here to Sweden from I dunno Minnesota or Wisconsin something and be like “okay, this is our ancestral home, our ancestors are from Sweden, we have kept the faith all these years, we believe in Thor, Loki, Hela, Captain America and Iron Man, you guys are the invaders...
The season of candy and frights is upon us. Everywhere I look, it is the same old suggestions for games. Resident Evil here, Silent Hill there, perhaps Castlevania. Halloween makes me think about jack-o'-lanterns and witches, ghosts and ghouls, colours, costumes, and the other Universal Monsters. With that in mind,...
Bloaty websites have always been a bit of a bugbear of mine. Lots of pointless Javascript and images larger than the 1990s version of Microsoft Excel. The 515KB club exists to showcase performance-based websites from across the web. There are two rules for joining, firstly it must be a proper website (no cheating)...
The other day I talked with Amin Bandali about the basics of living a more sustainable lifestyle. Amin has written a summary of our exchange, which you can find here: https://www.shemshak.org/~amin/living-healthier.html. Prot mentioned that our health is directly dependent on the following four factors: what we eat;...

About two years ago, curious about the buzz around generative AI for coding, I asked Claude to fix bugs and optimize the theme I use on the Manual. It spent a good while poking around the theme files. The changes it announced made sense. And how much had been slipping through the cracks! I was living in the future....
Giving a new design style a try: neo-brutalism. This style has always called to me, I find it to be a mix between modern/flat design and gives some retro 90s vibes. Also updated the home page to show full post content. I hope to start writing more frequently again, and I want to take a stab at doing some...
I'm going back to writing articles in my native language because it's easier for me. I won't stop writing articles in English, but there will just be fewer of them. Thank you for following ThinkRoot's Journal via RSS. You can also use Atom or JSON Feed.
Check out As in guillotine... for more. NOTE: It’s been a hectic few weeks with the new gig, and I attended my first industry conference in Philly earlier this week, so this is a bit more random collection of things than usual. Each one’s worth a click, though, so get to reading! _ONE Before Rolling Out a New...
Fall is finally here. After our youngest’s major fall activity ended, we are happily diving into a less-stressful remainder of the season. We keep plugging away. With work, Pika is still growing, but I’d like it to grow a tad more per month. Let’s go potential bloggers, get off the socials! We’re finding that we’re...
23 Dapper | INDEX | 25 Fracture Self-imposed constraint: Use the letters of the prompt word inside a 2-inch square to illustrate its meaning. Hongdian Black Forest fountain pen, EF, black ink on 120 gsm paper.
(It’s Halloween Week on Unsung, where we’re sharing scary, spooky, and creepy stories.) In 2018, users of the still relatively-new Amazon Echo devices would occasionally hear their Alexa… laughing. It felt completely unprompted, and creepy as hell. There are so many memes and exaggerations that it is hard to find...
The Telegraph has introduced a new online newsletter called Characters, which reprints choice obituaries from recent years. As the obits have long been the best thing in the paper, I naturally signed up for this one – and today they came up with a gem from 2007. It's the obituary of one Sammy Duddy, who has the...
If you ask a group of people a philosophical question or present them with a challenging thought experiment, it’s often the case that they will express very different views about it. We quite naturally interpret this as different people having different intuitions. But is that what’s going on? In “Conflicting...
I've never really tracked my #100DaysToOffload effort very well, so I decided to create a page to help me track it. Turns out I've completed the challenge 7 times! https://kevquirk.com/100 Thanks for reading this post via RSS. RSS is ace, and so are you. ❤️ You can reply to this post by email, or leave a comment.
I have known of Final Fantasy for ages now. It was one of the first franchises I discovered by myself, outside the usual Nintendo games, FIFA or Halo. I remember learning about RPGs and figuring out what turn based combat was, I thought that such a granular level of control over character actions would be kinda...
The best thing that happened this week Our daughter is enjoying her holiday off from school, and this week we went to see Aladdin the musical (the kids' version). We had a really good time and it was a well put together show. We also went for dinner to celebrate our 10 year wedding anniversary. Playing Copious...
This will officially be marked as post no. 100 for my first ever #100DaysToOffload challenge! 🎉 I can’t believe I made it with around 80 days to spare. If I recall correctly, this was the first blogging challenge I participated, and to be fair, it was ambitious of me to take it up as it sounded like an impossible...
Listen sometimes a man just wants to try to draw his cat Salty Dog as a Red Mage in FFXIV and ends up accidentally giving him a Gen-Z broccoli haircut and/or Mae Borowski-style nightmare eyes
This morning was the usual thing. I like catching up with some of the YouTube creators. Most of them here in Cambodia are an easy miss. It’s never the day to day life things I dislike with them although I question how and why. It’s more their mantra. Their message each day. Been following this woman expat from the...
I didn’t use to have curtains in my living room — the apt. is er south-east facing, so it has sun in the mornings and afternoons when I’m at work. But after I started working more from home, it got to be ridiculous — I had to move around all day to avoid having the sun shining in my face. (Especially in winter when...
“The Ides of March” persists in popular memory due to its association with the assassination of Julius Caesar. Every month on the Roman calendar had Ides. The Ides of October would have been October 15, 2026 on the ancient Roman calendar. I published an article on inflatable Jack-’o-lanterns I captured on the Ides...
It has been a busy few days, especially yesterday, but happily, we've gotten some important tasks done. We should have a tech arriving at our fixer-upper house in Spartanburg to get our internet set up--which meant we spent an hour yesterday finding the Spectrum sales store, waiting for 10 minutes, and then going...
I am very late to write this but anyways. But please do the survey. KDE Plasma desktop icons (the actual system that holds the icons, not the .desktop files) is a bit crusty, due to many years of people fixing bugs there. This now causes new bugs in return. So, at Akademy this year I had my own very first BoF around...
OverviewTwo PHP flaws were being probed before defenders had patches, a stolen ConnectWise application credential opened Microsoft 365 tenants, and a Railway intrusion put customer secrets at risk. Those three stories would have been enough for an ugly week. The rest of the list adds exploited SD-WAN and media...
Good friends and family know this, but I am bad at email. Like chronically bad. If you have tried to email me, you know this too and you either never got a reply or received one 9-months later starting with the phrase, “Sorry.” I am truly sorry… but also I’m not. It’s a function of who I am. I was never great at...
I am, once again, cheating (a lot). I had originally planned to finally read Hamilton’s Battalion for the July TBR Challenge (theme: Freedom!); alas, shit happened, and I…did not. As I find myself behind again with this month’s read, I’m muddling my way through by reviewing one of the three novellas in the anthology...

Prose Over PlotWhat is Weird Fiction? What is New Weird Fiction? What is New Weird Horror? What is New Weird Lit or New Weird Science Fiction or New Weird Other and do any of these distinctions mean anything and/or is that the whole point of the genre? There are some types of weird fiction that we call weird because...
The Venetians are mentioned twide in the biography of Sergius, archbishop of Ravenna (744–769, in the "Liber pontificalis ecclesiae Ravennatis".
October 2026. Rye (East Sussex) to Ford (West Sussex). Simon’s blog is always a great read, a tale of derring-do, parental love and indomitable livers, if not bladders. Such has been the ferocity of his pub ticking that the Chronicles of BRAPA are some way behind (I also got massively behind in my GBG completion...
Earlier this year, in WN-23/2026, I set a goal of doing at least 3 pull-ups by the end of this year. I did that last week, WN-42/2026. But I didn’t ask my coach to record it. Mostly because I didn’t know I could. This week, I have been repeating it. So I thought I should record it. So here it goes. Also took the...
