Hi, I’m Alex. I live in Columbus, Ohio, where I’m a dad to two kids and share a home with two dogs and a cat. I’ve been making things with computers since the early 2000s. I started with an Atari 400 and moved on to writing C for Palm Pilots, which eventually led to a career in software. These days I work in management, but I still spend my limited free time building websites and small apps by hand. This site is about human-centric technology, personal software, and life beyond screens. I write about old computers and the interfaces of old, programming as a creative hobby, tools that respect the people using them, and the things that pull me away from my desk: cycling, hiking, photography, retro video games, and family. The subjects vary, but the thread connecting them is simple: technology should help us create, pay attention, connect with people, and then get out of the way.

It’s incredible how much good a hike does for the body. Trading the chaos of the city for the chirping of the birds and crickets puts the mind at ease. As I walk through the woods, I’ve noticed my heart rate hits a much lower average...

Back in the days of Geocities, I spent a lot of time hacking away on raw HTML and CSS. I enjoyed tweaking things, making it just right and experimenting with random ideas I had. I’d sketch things out, then turn them into a close(ish)...
