This past week, there was a total solar eclipse, visible from a path stretching along far northern Russia, Greenland, Iceland, and Spain. Like many of this year’s eclipse chasers, I was clouded out – though I did have a lovely couple minutes of darkness on an Icelandic fjord. I’m already planning for the next time the Moon blocks the Sun: in the Mediterranean a bit less than a year from now. But most people don’t know there’s another total eclipse even sooner – and I can...
I’m a terrible tuner. Yeah, I’m the guy twiddling clock radio dials before bed every night with scrunched up eyebrows. Usually I end up on a crystal-clear station that I quickly realize isn’t the one I was aiming for or I end up accidentally using my body as an antenna so the sound gets fuzzy the second I move my hand away. People, if you’re like me, you’d definitely find these moments over on 1000 Annoying Things, that non-existent netherlist we’ve mentioned before that...
Rikka is from the makers of Tiger & Dragon, which I greatly enjoyed. The use of mahjong-like tiles is nice. Although not absolutely necessary, it does make the game experience better. You can consider Rikka simplified mahjong. It does feel like mahjong, but there are some important differences. You start with a hand of 5 tiles. On your turn you take a tile then discard a tile. I once was this kind of person who looked at house cleaning videos and thought to myself, “what a difficult process and such tricky equipments! Who needs a water/wet vacuum?!” Let me introduce you to Hetch. Their full name is Hetch V10. So, since I became a full-time housewife (please don’t confuse me with a tradwife. I still love money, okay?), I found a new fixation on cleaning videos hashtag so satisfying. One day, I saw this video from China, a CCTV recording of a...
I'm writing this blogpost on the Independence Day of Indonesia, 17th of August. Honestly, I can go on a rant about how this country sucks and the government is shit. But instead, I want to use this opportunity to make this blogpost a rallying call for the people of the Indonesian TTRPG scene (or those who admire/curious/interested in the Indonesian TTRPG scene) to write a gameable blogpost related to Indonesia! (Also, this is a reason for me to bother my friends who...

I like to keep an eye out for cool shapes during my walks and use them as inspiration for my #SidewalkFriends drawings. It’s like my version of hunting for Pokémon. Some oil stains on the asphalt reminded me of one of an old FBI composite sketch or wanted poster from the 1990s. Urban Pickleball – New York, New York It looks like the Pickleball craze has hit New York City as well. I saw another Pickleball court at Hudson Yards, but it wasn’t nearly as interesting visually. It looked too clean and corporate. This one, located in an inner-city park, has a much grittier urban appearance, complete with a chain-link fence. Back when I grew up in New York, we played paddleball or handball on these courts. When I was picking up tennis, I would use the...
In Volume 9 of Hippocampus Press' Letters of H. P. Lovecraft, we find HPL telling Duane W. Rimel that Otis Adelbert Kline is "probably the best agent in the business" (p. 305), "a wizard at placing things" (290) with lots of "influence" (306) who "regard[s] fiction writing as a business & not an art" (286). In our last blog post I was talking about how good some of Frank Belknap Long's early stories are, in contrast to his reprehensible later work, and in a September 8,...
There are things in life that have to get considerably worse before they get better. A renovation is obvious. Haircuts. Dental work. Thanksgiving dinners in particular seem to get considerably worse and then even more worse. Still. Poor Snacks. I looked up to the owl house the other morning and this mutation is what was...Read More
Back to work today :( and hells, it's been only 4 weeks since the last one of these Coding/Tech I've been probably quite productive here during my vacation. Firstly, I fixed up an old laptop, which I'm still getting to grips with. Secondly, I went and took stock of my machines. Then I set up my homelab again. It's been about 5 days now and it's going well. Since that post I've set up ForgeJo Actions and Renovate Bot for my Codeberg Once getting my CI working I've gone and...

Am reading in “American Ramble” how kind strangers in small towns often bend over backwards to help another stranger like the author (Neil King) as he walks from D.C. to New York on foot. One story tells of being in the small town of Cranbury near Jersey, telling locals of his plan to hike through what he wasn’t aware was swampland. A local schoolteacher and his 80 year old mom rustled up their kayak for him to use instead, offering to meet him on the other side with his...
The M5 iPad Pro is such an awesome iPad, but it's the nano-texture display that puts it over the top.The M5 iPad Pro has reignited my love for the iPad. I have used iPads since the beginning of time, and no iPad has been more fun for longer than this 11-inch M5 iPad Pro. But, it's likely not due to the M5 chip. For me, it's a return to the 11-inch format, and the introduction of nano-texture to my iPad usage.I’ve owned too many iPads to count. Of all shapes and sizes, too....

Official shot from https://www.kosentampa.com/galleryAs my birthday neared I told Alyson I want to visit Kosen - a Michelin star omakase fine dining experience. As August 15 rolled around it was time to visit and experience the summer menu as well as both of our first visits ever to this restaurant. We got there roughly 10 minutes prior to reservation and they had us sit in a booth at the bar waiting until we were invited into the dining room. Roughly at reservation time...
I’m in San Francisco staying with my friend Kevin Kelly. He and I have been having conversations about AI and writing for many moons, way back before ChatGPT was a thing. Last night, before heading off to bed, he told me he now thinks of himself as writing for AI. The LLMs are the audience. I woke up this morning and wrote a little story inspired by that conversation. I don’t think it’ll make it into my upcoming anthology (most of my stories won’t), but thought I’d share...
I was born and raised in Australia, which has some of the best coffee in the world (I'm not biased, I swear!) so finding good coffee can be a bit of a high bar for me. But Japan doesn't disappoint, and if you know where to look there are so many good coffee spots in Tokyo. There's a big range too, from your traditional kissatens to espresso-based drinks to pour-overs. Usually if we have a free day on the weekend, my husband and I will hop on the train to check out a new...
This morning, after feeding the outside cats, I went to check on the wood pile, and spotted a bunch of squirmy wormies moving about. One of them paused and posed for a photo. They are so frigging cute. I was doing well this morning, while doing my morning rounds and harvesting the cabbage, etc. I … Continue reading The luring begins! Also, a pre-op top up shop
Over the past day or so, you may have noticed that Daily Nous was down quite a bit, and sluggish when you could access it. It turn out there were over 127 million requests (web communications) initiated with Daily Nous over the past 24 hours or so. That is 135 times the normal amount. According to my IT guy, the best explanation for this is that there was a DDOS attack on Daily Nous. Why? Why now? I have no idea. It took a little while to diagnose and address the issue. In...
