This has not been an easy-ride by a couple thousand miles, but there does seem to be light at the end of the tunnel. Grandma is improving. My Sister, Uncle, Christina and I have broken up the week so the entire shit doesn't land on my Mother's shoulders cos she was starting to show real signs of Hard Stress. There...

Big update here, I changed the link colours and everything so I'd be able to see something. Added a new section for locations and there, Pohjola, and added a page for Lemminkäinen. I also added a new section below that features a runosong incantation that should change every month if I got this javascript to work...
I swear to you, I’m not into woo-woo stuff. But the oddest thing happened to me today. And this is not the first time such a thing has happened to me. Basically, I’ve had things reappear in my life as mysteriously as they disappeared. Emphasis on mysterious: There is usually no logical explanation how these things...
Being More ActiveHaving my best friend visiting HK got my average daily steps up to 14694 last week! Because my calves were destroyed after descending 300 meters on Tai Mo Shan (steep descent of over 500 steps of concrete stairs), I had to take two rest days. Want to know why I went to base of Tai Mo Shan, read my...
This looks like a pretty neat interactive fiction game, by Michael Gentry. Excited to give it a shot. This is a pretty enormous game. There are lots of rooms to explore and lots things to mess with, and they don’t all necessarily contribute directly to solving the game. Don’t be daunted. Don’t spend too much time...
Hello! One of my favourite things is starting to learn an Old Boring Technology that I’ve never tried before but that has been around for 20+ years. It feels really good when every problem I’m ever going to have has been solved already 1000 times and I can just get stuff done easily. I’ve thought it would be cool to...
I stumbled upon a January 15, 2011 analytically-inclined defense of Carmelo Anthony by Nate Silver (I also think the 2012-13 Knicks prove it was at least possible to construct a championship-caliber team around Mr. Anthony), written at the hight of the Anthony-to-Knicks trade rumors that would culminate with the...
It's been some time now since I decided to start a web design agency, LM Web Design. Here's an update on what's been happening: Nothing. I did a free project for a guy at work, for his cake baking business. He was happy with the result. I kinda was. But since then, nothing. I haven't chased any new work. Just left...
Because dwm is customized through editing its source code, it's pointless to make binary packages of it. This keeps its userbase small and elitist. No novices asking stupid questions. This isn't my first time finding out about suckless.org. I remember browsing their site a few years ago when I first got interested...
January 26, 2026 Giles Turnbull Gemini and other tools like it aren’t intended for me - they’re for people who find writing hard. I find it easy. Of course I’m going to be dismissive, of course I’m going to want it to stop pestering me. Some people will welcome that.[…] So, sure, I don’t value LLM words for my own...
We introduced curl’s -J option, also known as --remote-header-name back in February 2010. A decent amount of years ago. The option is used in combination with -O (--remote-name) when downloading data from a HTTP(S) server and instructs curl to use the filename in the incoming Content-Disposition: header when saving...
A few days ago, I was poking around in Apple’s Weather app and came across some interesting stuff hiding behind the sunrise/sunset box. First, there’s a plot that shows the movement of the sun throughout the day, followed by sunrise and sunset times: The little dots under the “horizon” represent the beginnings and...
January 2026. Fleetwood. Not really a cut-out-and-keep guide, and I’d struggle to sell you Fleetwood (pop. 26,232, plus a Football League team) as a holiday destination, but it’s better than Clacton, so there’s that. I had half an hour before my new GBG pub opened, plenty of time really. I’d actually seen the owner...
Despite appearances, R.S. Thomas, the crag-faced curmudgeon of Sarn-y-Plas, had a tender side, which showed up quite often in his poetry, as in this love poem to his long-suffering wife of 51 years, the artist Mildred (Elsi) Eldridge –LuminaryMy luminary,my morning and eveningstar. My light at noonwhen there is no...
"Humanity needs to wake up, and this essay is an attempt—a possibly futile one, but it’s worth trying—to jolt people awake.""For example, AI models are trained on vast amounts of literature that include many science-fiction stories involving AIs rebelling against humanity. This could inadvertently shape their priors...
In part 2 of the current Hands-on SAP Dev live stream mini-series on CXL, the core expression language in CDS, Patrice demonstrated how declarative constraints are actually realised, and it made me sit back and wonder. I thought I'd write a quick blog post summarising what he showed, as I think it's worth stopping...
In my teens, I spent a lot of time playing an interactive fiction game called Hamlet: The Text Adventure. I enjoyed the snarky little additions the creator, Robin Johnson, made to the Shakespearean story (there's a room where you come across a character from another play, Othello, muttering about a "brazen tart")...
Recently I had to opportunity to watch this classic during a flight. It’s such a great movie1. It was the second time I watched it. The first one was during my teenage years, probably around 15-16. Many years later, with a few bits of wisdom and experience by the means of romances, heartbreaks, and situationships,...
That was such a random yet predictable ending... why is this so popular???
The ef-themes are a collection of light and dark themes for GNU Emacs that provide colourful (“pretty”) yet legible options for users who want something with a bit more flair than the modus-themes (also designed by me). Package name (GNU ELPA): ef-themes Official manual: https://protesilaos.com/emacs/ef-themes...
Since I wrote the last long post, I've had a burst of inspiration for writing about many different ideas, especially involving another important event of my life—last year was already full of these life-changing events. To write a post, I tried to focus on one idea multiple times; however, due to my ADHD mind, it...
I am rarely hopeful about politics and culture — in the Milne Typology I am an Eeyore, which is the kind of thing that happens to people who reflect often upon original sin — but even so, much of what’s happening now surprises me. I always expect bad things, but I didn’t expect these bad things. For the record, and...

Lately I've been getting into generative coding. Stuff like p5.js and just svg's in general. Super inspired by people like George Francis and Daniel Shiffman. But on completely different arenas I'm also really digging Suno for musical exploration. I've started to play with the endless amounts of half baked...
I collect cool, interesting links spread all over the web and share them here in daily posts. Hope you enjoy! More of them in the archive. Signal's popularity soars in Europe. In Finland, the app is the most downloaded one in the Play Store's communication category among free apps. I'm curious about the reasons. It...
📌 This was meant to be posted yesterday, but as always, I was too exhausted to function afterwards. I hadn’t planned to do another Century ride so soon after my very first one last month. However, while casually perusing the SUMMIIT Stages website earlier this month, I noticed that their Capstone (7-year...

Currently thinking about how using AI will just increasingly become even more of a class/privilege thing than it already is. We've already established that different groups and areas around the world get access to models differently, but one puzzle piece in the AI discourse is obviously money. If I have the money...
Hey all! We've got a Discord so you can chat with us about the wild world of object storage and get any help you need. We've also set up Answer Overflow so that you can browse the Q&A from the web. Today I'm going to discuss how we got there and solved one of the biggest problems with setting up a new community or...
The track "Love the way you lie" is a duet between rapper Eminem and rnb artist Rihanna. Both are well accomplished people, both have money to live any dream they wished, yet both have such anguish being their words.
The Oklahoma City Thunder won the 2024-25 NBA Championship. This title, the franchise’s first since 1978-79 when it was the Seattle SuperSonics, prompted me to write an article on NBA franchise championship droughts. The Thunder’s championship gave rise to another article idea. Back in November 2023, I wrote an...
More family stuff to deal with. And work has mainly been a mixture of frustration and LLMs. Sporadically For Site Manager I took great care setting up Capybara/Selenium tests. I put in a whole load of timing code and the tests ran extremely reliably. I even got them running in parallel, using Selenium Grid to run 4...
In which I challenge myself to draw a pokemon every day until I stop Mon 01/26/2026 - Alolan Sandshrew I was thinking more about ice / snow themed pokemon (since our official tally as of this writing is that we got THREE FEET of snow) and my kid reminded me that Sandshrew's Alolan variant is ice/steel so I locked...

My first visit of 2026 to NUE was a solid "meh" photography-wise. But the second visit last Friday didn't disappoint. My goal was to catch a rare visitor in our neck of the woods: an Airbus A320-200 operated by FLYONE Armenia (reg. no. ER-00007).
When I dreamed to write a book I always thought that it would be a novel, not because I love novels (I do enjoy them) but because a novel is the usual. Instantly I'd feel burdensome, novels are long and I haven't be able to write something long till this day. However, I completely forgot about short stories, reading...
This is what I’m focused on right now, in the real world, not the aspirational multiverse where I have unlimited time. Work I’m deep in MSP life, doing the usual blend of cybersecurity, IT admin, and “why is this one thing suddenly on fire?” Rolling out extra protection for clients (DNS filtering with Datto DNS...
The rule of least power on the web incentivised using HTML before reaching for CSS, CSS before JavaScript, and bashing it into the JS script as a last resort. Every time the web ships new features that let us shift the implementation left on the stack, I’m excited about it. In recent years, we have received a heap...

On Mastodon, Hendrik Weimer posted 5 most boosted Fediverse posts of 2025. The numbers look kind of low, but the author explains the methodology below. At any rate, two of the 5 posts have to do with our trust in software. Number 1 from Max Leibman: No, I do not want to install your app. No, I do not want that app...
Born into a World War to live through another, Albert Camus (November 7, 1913–January 4, 1960) died in a car crash with an unused train ticket to the same destination in his pocket. Just three years earlier, he had become the second-youngest laureate of the Nobel Prize in Literature, awarded him for writing that...
