Mages & Modems is a memoir by writer-podcaster-developer vga256, and one I enjoyed very much. As soon as I began reading it, I could tell that the author and I had come from similar places, in spirit if not geography. I could relate to so much of what I read in his stories. He and I were among the young people...
As a general rule, I don’t talk much about my professional life on this blog - working in tech means the vast majority of what I do on a daily basis is wrapped up in enough layers of NDAs, Information Security Policies, and international regulatory language that even a lawyer would struggle to find the safe footing,...
I quit my job in January, and have been on a professional sabbatical since then. I have spent the past six weeks in New York, a city I lived in for two years two years ago. New York has always been, to me, a city of fantasy. When I was unhappy in San Francisco, it was imagining a better life in New York that drew me...

Another quick update to Wasat, my Gemini Protocol client library for Python. With v0.5.0 I've added a method for getting the list of currently-trusted hosts, and also added a public property to the client class for getting access to the trust store object. Generally these shouldn't be required, shouldn't be...
This comment from Bruno, on Bluesky (pt_BR): Instagram launches new tool that drains your entire bank account and kills your family. Here’s how to turn it off 👇 Instagram doesn’t (yet) do that. His joke references the recent news that photos from public Instagram profiles could be used to generate new images on...
I came across Martijn’s post on Bubbles today and would like to take this opportunity to answer his question from my point if view … I can already hear you complaining that you shouldn’t use tables for layout. Why exactly? CSS is simple, stop making it hard Or: how to embrace 1997 CSS blog.brixit.nl All of us (with...
Dear reader,For a long time, Mullvad VPN stood as the embodiment of a perfect privacy-focused company. From innovative features and data minimization to responsible marketing, Mullvad checked every box that mattered. It almost appeared that the company was immune to criticism. The recent revelation that Mullvad’s...
me and my best friend conversate by sending hours and hours of video messages to each other, so naturally my phone has been dying this whole year due to the loss of storage space. I’ve been too lazy to clear through it all, but today I finally got around to it.
It has been a bit since I updated this page, and quite a lot has changed since January. Some of it has been exciting, some of it has been hard, and most of it has happened while I was just trying to keep the normal parts of life moving. Here is the honest version of what I am focused on right now.WorkI am still deep...
The first things I noticed about 2029 First Avenue were the decorative lintels above the second floor windows. Attractively styled for window lintels on upper First Avenue, I figured this stubby holdout wedged beside two brick buildings between East 104th and 105th Streets must have been a former stable. I imagined...
Started working on a flora section in cosmology, added incantations for hunting otters and reindeer as well as berry picking and milk luck and making leather and pottery, new blog post, page made for Hongatar and Laurukainen in deities and heroes, new page for quotes and anecdotes I like in other info, an essay on...
Friday is my last working day before a four week vacation. Since this is my first year as a full-time employee, rather than on a hourly basis, I don't have any vacation days saved, so I'll take a shorter vacation this year. I'd like to keep a rainy day fund of vacation-days. Being an adult however, it feels like...
“Americans are probably reading more words than ever before. What has changed is what they read, and how. People are bombarded with emails, text messages, X posts, Reddit threads, Instagram captions. This explosion of textual fragments has come at the expense of devoting sustained attention to longer written works...
July 2026. Sheffield. It’s that time of year again, when local newspapers, even the subscription ones without clickbait, send reporters out to find your city’s top beer gardens, and invite comments from folk who like to reminisce about “The Good Old Days“. I subscribe to Sheffield’s Tribune, which has good if often...
Missing In ActionI am a bit disappointed at myself for breaking my relatively consistent weeknote habit—missing out on W26 and W27. I am now writing this on Friday to make sure W28 is not cancelled! Life just kinda caught up, and partly also because I have been engrossed in my secondary site / WordPress migration...
And well, here is another weeknote for y’all to update you on what I’m up to. I’m still following the World Cup, I have done a return to the gym and even went on a Saturday. ⚽ Norway lost against England, so now the stakes are clear. No Latinos want Argentina to win again for some reason, and same goes for me, if...
For those of you in the UK. Do you remember who got the coveted Christmas number 1 slot in 2009? Do you remember how it came to be? I ask only because I randomly saw this post from my own blog. Thanks for reading and keeping RSS alive. Visit my site for more.
The scraping problem is worse than anyone can imagine and thanks to my friends at Sourceware we have some real data to prove it. I've been working more on Anubis' reputation database and I've run into a really weird discovery: 80-90% of the hits created by the honeypot feature are from IP addresses that do not...
Repeat that, repeatJames and I have come up with a collaborative writing project that you’re welcome to join as well! The idea is to share your thoughts on a poem through writing: there are no restrictions on the format, as long as you publish your words on your website. Let us know when you’ve written something...
Every time I look at Sven's blog I get jealous. I loved his previous design so much I copied it (with his permission). His new design is so fun and it's making me want to make mine more fun (no copying this time though). I'm just not sure I have the time at the moment. 🤔 https://svbck.blog/ Thanks for reading this...
Do notlet another night pass. The days are not endless. Do not waitfor clarity.Wait not for time. For space, peace, love. Wait for no one’s thumb of approval. There will be no sudden momentof enlightenment. The words will not write themselves. They have not found a way to transcribe thoughts yet. All that grey matterneeds...
GravityLoops, my gravity simulator in Interlisp and LOOPS, can finally show something on the screen. The program now animates a body of mass like the Moon interacting under gravity with a body of mass like the Earth. The dots in the simulation window here are the bodies after 180 days of simulated time, with the...
Working with lots of changes in parallel on git can be painful. You end up juggling branches and commits, and running scary rebase -i commands that can leave your tree in a half-broken state if you so much as sneeze. jj, an alternative to git, gets discussed a lot these days (1, 2, 3, 4) and is often pitched as a...

Some more of my notes from Thoughtworks Future of Software Development Retreat. When we had our first retreat in Utah early this year, nobody had heard of Harness Engineering. This time we had a whole session on it. When comes to the guide side of harnesses, most of the discussion is about context management. While...
I love taking notes, but one problem that I have is that that I start cherishing every notebook that I start. I can't seem to keep my notes messy. Eventually, I start structuring the notes, doing cleaner handwriting, adding a cover or some stickers ... and before I know it, the notebook is too well-organised for...
Replied to Using the Xteink X4, a minimalist e-reader by an author (Schemascape) I now find myself seeking out modern DRM-free e-books from more enlightened publishers. Here are some sources: For (mostly old) public domain works: Standard Ebooks Global Grey Ebooks Project Gutenberg For contemporary e-books without...

It has been interesting going back to work and getting up to speed with my new team’s systems, some of which are third-party and others are Very Much Invented Here. I find myself thinking about this quotation a lot: It seems that perfection is attained not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing...
Last Christmas, I published a short article titled My Gingerbread Man Soap Dispenser, which was, as the name suggests, about my gingerbread man soap dispenser. I had purchased him at a local discount store called Lot Less on December 20, 2025, mostly for aesthetic purposes (I recall it was about $3 to $3.50, but I...
Julia Roberts? She was in that one movie with that guy, and the other one with the other guy, and like 100 more. Whatever. But she’s old news. Like all the other celebrity names I actually recognize, which isn’t a lot, but is some. Just a minute ago a headline floated by: Person A is doing Thing with Person B, what...
I’m endlessly confounded (as a user) and fascinated (as a designer) when it comes the shortcut conventions in Google’s professional web apps. They seem… bad, but bad in a strange, inexplicable, enthralling way. Previously, we encountered this: The lessons there were, primarily: don’t… do this, and also maybe don’t...
Sadly, the review hosting this isn’t online anymore so I decided to publish it here, on my own website. This was back when I had vision. I’m fully blind now. I still remember well how I used to save everything: music, photos, eBooks, documents – just everything. The fear of missing out or losing something was simply too great. But at some point, I realized: I had everything, but I wasn’t using any of it. The shift from hoarding to tending was a real liberation for me....
Acho...
Collaborative writing is rewarding. In the past few months, I’ve been writing a lot. Not as much here, but for Aphera. Between our newsletter, blog, direct email feedback, and social media networks, I might spin up a draft and then bounce it off Ryan and Juan, or we volley it back and forth. It’s a remarkable thing:...
**Content Warning for mild medical stuff, mention of bloods, damning implications re: that girl being poison, and two guys named Jordan*** I had An Emergency yesterday! My tummybox had been a-twistin’ and a-crampin’ since Friday noon1; this had happened a couple of times previously but 1.) Never lasted more than 24...
You know those days? This is one of those. A full day prompt training. Probably nothing about sql queries or basic logic.
Yes, that’s Pure Blog. Don’t look at me like that. And by the way, that’s Mister What The Hell Is He Up To, to you. 😉 Reply by email
2026-07-13Hello! I'm glad I'm not talking about roadkill today.I've looked back at all the photos I've published on this website. A surprising amount of them — including yesterday's image — are iterations and improvements on previous photos I've taken. Those previous photos would have been shared through text...
I’ve been reading 1960s news (my grandpa saved a bunch of news yearbooks) as an alternative to internet and so far the most striking—and this goes for other books I’ve lead from fifties through nineties was that it was from a world of hope, a world that could change. Yeah, there were doomy pockets like the 1962 Cuba...
Halo: The Master Chief Collection is not a single game. As its title suggests, it is a collection of games (spoilers throughout this article). They all belong to the first-person shooter genre. Halo: Reach and Halo: ODST do not feature the Master Chief, the protagonist of our story, but they are basically the same...

In which I challenge myself to draw a pokemon every day until I stop Hope y'all had a great weekend! Mine felt exceedingly short. You see, a bigoted, elderly politician who has done untold damage to the rights of women, queer people, people of color and our ability to have affordable healthcare in my country (to put...
Few things in life are more exasperating than seeing the potential in someone you love and seeing them continually fall short of it, stumbling again and again over the same self-erected roadblocks of character and conduct, comporting themselves in a manner painfully inferior to what you know them to be capable of....

A couple of weeks ago I read The Last Quiet Thing by Terry Godier, and it made me very conscious of what my devices were asking from me. I keep talking about seeking calm to everyone who’ll listen, and still I hadn’t seen it like that: our devices demanding work from us. We tend to think it’s only the big, evil,...
