A weekly recap of the articles and posts I’ve read that I think are worth your time. John Gruber, “X Once Again Marks the Spot”: If you have stayed away, or even just mostly away, from X for years and then come back, people just say things like “Hey, glad you’re back!” On the other networks, especially Mastodon, they tell you you’re “feeding Nazis” — by going to the platform where Tim Cook posts...
Until I started reading (mostly for research, but I'm enjoying it) Apocalypse: A History of the End of Time by John Michael Greer, I had forgotten that the world was supposed to end in a mighty cosmic collision on the 21st of December, 2012. This could apparently be inferred from the ever reliable Mayan calendar (or...
u/SnooSongs6758 asked on r/golang: I’m creating a REST API using Golang v1.25, Gin v1.10.0, and Validator v10.20.0. I have a PATCH endpoint where, when the address attribute is: undefined -> keep the original data null -> delete the original data contains something -> replace the original data with the new Right now...
Between steeper trails, shorter cranks, and an older body I've been looking for bigger single speed cogs. With 160mm cranks I'm already at a 30-22 gear. I wouldn't mind running bigger rings and cogs on both ends to get less tension on the chain and therefore a longer life and better efficiency. Many moons ago I...
Recently, James Hoffmann conducted a coffee fermentation project, along similar lines to his previous decaf project. Since this project was based entirely around caffeinated coffee, and I am quite caffeine-sensitive, I opted to just do this as a risky “drink one cup every few days” thing rather than a formal...
Mama would never let me down, right? I wasn't feeling like anything spicy this weekend, so I had to dig into my box of science subjects a little deeper. Turns out I collect a lot more flavours that are inherently or outwardly spicy than I thought. I usually really like Mama noodles, in fact as of this writing their...

After a nine-day work/NLJ/newsletter-induced lull in the Pook-Emu Bee, I return with my sometimes-regularly-scheduled daily links. Speech 1 | Foul Call: New York Times Calls for Canceling Sophie Cunningham in The Athletic (Jonathan Turley. Oct. 11, 2026.) I largely agree with Mr. Turley. But more material to Ms....
My favourite piece of writing I’ve done about motor memory remains “Shift + Shift” from 2018. I have linked to it over the years, but if you haven’t checked it out yet, you might find it interesting. Just this week, I have had another similar moment, and amazing in a slightly new way. How many of you tap ⌘1, ⌘2, ⌘3...

Save the story, cut the clutter Readeck helps you keep all that web content you’ll want to revisit in an hour, tomorrow, or in 20 years. Readeck uses the slogan "Save the story, cut...
October 11, 2026 After using macOS 27's window tiling to put two windows side by side, Drafts stopped remembering its window size and position. Every time I opened it, the window appeared in the left half of the screen. Turning off window tiling in System Settings didn't help. With some help from ChatGPT, I tracked...
Our language betrays our self-betrayals: We speak of finding love, as if it were an undiscovered eighth continent or a habitable world in another solar system, as if it got lost like the Little Red Riding Hood or the names of the women who painted the caves. Like the paradoxical notion of finding yourself, the...
A games-leaning week of links from 5 to 11 October, pulled from what I shared over on social.omgmog.net. There’s been a lot of effort going into decomp and recomp projects lately. I’ve been spending a lot of time playing the gen1recomps, and now Halo is in the mix. I couldn’t have dreamed of this 25 years ago, and...
vfmaddrnd231pd is a unique instruction from the FMA instruction set. Most instructions in that set have mnemonics like vfmadd231pd, but here rnd means something very specific. The Intel Software Development Manual documents it as: VFMADDRND231PD – Fused Multiply-Add of Packed Double-Precision Floating-Point Values...
Jeremy Stern introduces his fifteen-thousand word essay, published in Colossus, about Meta CEO, and Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg, with a lede so succinct it must be the envy of any writer: There they are. The Zuckerbergs. Ledes, also called hooks, are a brief sentence that entices someone to read a newspaper...
I’ve been a fan of RSS for a couple years now. What I like most is that feed reader software gives agency to the user. This can feel like unwanted friction at the beginning: your feed may start out blank and the burden is on you to fill it. But agency is what most modern social media sites lack. You deserve to read...
Over the past few months, the release of popular consumer/prosumer agents like Muse and Grok Bot has me truly impressed. I've used both, and I'm convinced that this paradigm shift from a simple chat interface → persistent AI agent whose knowledge about you grows will be the default way each of us interfaces with AI...
[ The stream will be recorded. You can watch it later. ] This evening I will do a live stream where I will continue developing the new denote-data feature for denote: it is an opt-in, in-memory cache with no dependencies that speeds up all sorts of operations. I have made lots of improvements to it and it is already...
5th October - 11th October Not claiming to be wholly responsible but, shortly after I mentioned it on my website, the water board were back looking at the leak at the junction. It was clearly a quick fix because now there's a square of fresh tarmac and, sadly, no midnight mountain stream. Today's soundtrack has been...
Pete Millspaugh has a lovely article over on WIRED that peers into the world of domains. (If you’re as interested in the esoteric details of domains as I am, follow Pete’s writing at Dot Com Press.) You should just read the article, but here are a few things that stood out to me. The .com Registry Did you know who...
How another go at keeping a plain text calendar is helping me clarify what goes where Making and using calendars is viscerally satisfying to me. I love the sense of stability and preparedness I get from seeing dates laid out in neat rows! Along with that comes the irresistible idea of writing notes to my future...
Looking out from my balcony at the Dusit Thani Hotel in Cairo, Egypt These weeknotes are over a week late. It’s been a busy time. After finishing up with work on Friday evening, I leapt straight for the ironing board to get a new set of work shirts ready for the following week. On Saturday morning, just after 6am, a...

That’s pretty much the best text published following the election of the German far-right party to the state parliament of Saxony-Anhalt a few weeks ago. (Best in the original German version) FCK AFD …
Last week I started a new way of doing weeknotes and I love it. I also still updated my now page, which is a bonus good thing for this past week 😀 Here are my 5 good things for week 41. 🎬 my husband and I watched John Wick 1 and 2, and what I loved the most is us alternating exclamations of “what???” “How???” and...
Here we are back at a favored spot for some coffee and some thinking. I don’t know which came first. This place always gives me respite from whatever came before. I’ve been thinking on the blog lately. Like what would I want to add that would be fun or challenging. I’ve had both things making the thing become my...
It feels like a major life turn after 35, even though I thought 35 was like half-life. I haven’t crossed the second half-life yet. I think there are a couple more years until the second half-life, but it still feels like a big turn after 35. I didn’t think much about 45, but this one feels big. I am making some...
Born into wealth and privilege on a New Jersey estate in 1864, Louis Eilshemius wasn’t your typical New York City painter. The income his father made from an importing business gave him the means to travel through Europe, study at the Art Students League, and ultimately settle down and spend the bulk of his...
2026-10-11Hello! I'm this close to pulling an all-nighter over nothing. No idea why, but there's always something worth doing.Past ten o' clock, I was still walking outside, exploring abandoned paths and overgrown gardens. I found this shed on my travels and decided to photograph it.I haven't yet gone back to this...
A student in Vienna, Austria has recently made the news because he has refused to stop using his Meta smart glasses at school, causing a legal dispute, and - to the surprise and outrage of many - actually preventing his expulsion. For now, he is allowed to keep wearing them and attend school until a solution is...
One dang time, we played For The Queen! THIS dang time, we invited Amy! ENOUGH PREAMBLE. Phase I: Constitutional Monarchy We’re offered three options for Queens by choose-a-number draw, and because Amy is the newest player and she uh, has a type, we have chosen the BATTLE QUEEN (Q19): Phase II: The Reading Of The...
I can’t lie. I’ve been focussing a lot on the vast piles of negative stuff that surround us more than I should. I’ve been thinking about politics and wars and climate change and heatwaves and El Niño and energy security. I’ve been thinking about friends and family who are different levels of ill and elderly, and who...
…are a soldering iron and a hot glue gun. Seriously, nothing beats the feeling of handing your kid a previously broken toy that you fixed yourself. Tonight’s surgery involved a light up fan thing that had fallen, breaking the plastic shaft and pulling the wires out. Came out good as new after some glue and solder!
There has been a lot of talk about website comments on Bubbles. I think it started with a post by Forking Mad, and a bunch of replies are linked at the bottom of that page. My blog posts have had a "Reply by e-mail" button for years. Some of them also link to other places where you can comment. This has been a nice...
a half-assed review"> Discover the corrupted land of Sanctuary as it falls into a new era of darkness. Lilith, daughter of Mephisto, Lord of Hatred, has been freed from exile and now her hateful influence threatens to consume the world. Only you and your fellow adventurers stand between Lilith and Sanctuary’s ruin....
1. Stability region 2. Stability mountain 3. Cryer's k-step methods Colin Cryer in his article on $A_0$-stable methods mentioned in passing that there is a method, which is $A_0$-stable but not $A[\alpha]$-stable for any $\alpha$. For the terminology see Tendler-like Formulas for Stiff ODEs. This post shows the...
I am aware of the very real problems with Apple as a company. Nevertheless, I find their products and services extremely helpful when used intentionally and synergistically. This is not a paid advertisement, haha. Just sharing a few thoughts about how these tools are helping me. I am working on many things all at...
I am sitting at a desk in the Drury Hotel in Carmel, Indiana, on the northern edge of Indianapolis. I'm here for an onground intensive for the TEEM program, my current route to ordination. If you've been following along all week, you know that I'm here a day early. It's a long trip, which I make by car. I like being...
The picture above is dark, the important thing is that little bit of light on the top of Grand Teton. We got up extra early to watch that triangle appear and slowly spread down the range. I should mention we did this without coffee because of the water issues in Jackson (and poor planning on our part). After basking...
Well, another week. This one completely without any trains, so there’s that. Messed up sleep schedule, again. All my life I heard that with age people go to bed earlier and get up earlier. I cannot confirm. While my natural sleep rhythm was midnight to eight for almost all my adult life, lately it seems very much...
Athletic Brewing Dark and Gourdy It's been a while since I posted an NA beer review. As you might have guessed by the name, it's a pumpkin beer. I hate pumpkin pie. I like pumpkin beer. This is a good one. It's a porter with flavors of cinnamon, clove, and nutmeg. The pumpkin is very subtle. This is a worthy...
