My blog used to use Crimson Pro as the main body font, something that threads the needle of being serif-y enough for the Possession-esque posts, but not too out of place for the technical macOS Messages debugging ones. You should consider customizing anything you use, and the font is no exception. Let's tweak it!
Canadian poet and writer Anne Carson has been awarded this year’s Nobel Prize in Literature. I’m not the biggest fan of poetry, but poets, particularly Evelyn Araluen, have been doing well in some of the literary awards in recent years, which is certainly a boost for the craft.
Today was is a holiday in Brazil, and me and my friend were feeling pretty down, só we went to the beach together to stare at the ocean and feel the sun.
This is one of the things which will move slowly along the same path as my day. It’s almost 5am so I have those thoughts. There’s a slim distance between blog and journal for me most times. Things travel between. Morning thoughts laying in bed still an exercise in journaling but then I think of wanting to just write...
Unplanned Ten Week HiatusI’m back! Well, technically I haven’t left my internet home; it’s just my weeknotes that went into intermission. It was likely triggered as a respite from Blaugust1 and also time spent on migrating my secondary site from WordPress to Quartz2. It feels like there has been a fair amount that...
Angry man. User:Tomia, original image en:User:Polylerus. Public domain image via Wikimedia Commons. I’m late with my blurb this week, since I was traveling on the day I usually write it. And it’ll be brief and uselessly indignant, because of post-trip catch-up and exhaustion, yes, but also thanks to the very weird...
The fifth part of a series about bare-metal programming for x86 PC-type computers, using Linux for development. This article is about handling files using EFI's Simple File Protocol.
1. Consistency 2. Parasitic roots 3. Stability region 4. Comparison James Varah created six linear multistep methods with zero roots at infinity, i.e., $A_\infty^0[\alpha]$-stable methods. These methods share this property with the BDF. For the terminology see Tendler-like Formulas for Stiff ODEs. This post gives...
These are the last warm sunny days in Kyoto. Soon the temporary outdoor dining platforms along the river (yuka or kawadoko) will be taken down for the winter. 京都では、暖かく晴れた日々も残りわずかとなった。まもなく、川沿いに設けられた仮設の屋外席、川床(ゆか・かわどこ)も、冬を前に撤去される。
For the past two years, I've been working with a client , an enterprise software company (built with Ruby on Rails, of course), particularly in the niche of software used by enterprises of all sizes + MSPs and IT administrators for real businesses like law firms, municipalities, architects, hospitals, manufacturers,...
The Grand Tetons and Yellowstone are really close together — it just takes an hour on the John D. Rockefeller, Jr., Memorial Parkway to move between the two National Parks. It’s a lovely little drive along rivers and framed by trees. Not sponsored: I only know the name of this stretch of road because of an app...

I was walking along Market Street (pedestrianised) this morning when a man, walking briskly in the opposite direction, drew level with me and, as he passed, turned his head and, looking me firmly in the eye and grinning cheerily, exclaimed: 'Growing up in the Fifties and Sixties, eh? The best of times, weren't they,...
Various parties concerned about the risks that artificial intelligence (AI) pose to humanity have called for a pause in its development. But such a call faces a difficult collective action problem. Can it be solved? I have been skeptical (and suggested an alternate type of approach to AI safety here). But a new...
One thing I love about the i3 window manager is what’s called the scratchpad. The scratchpad lets me toggle the visibility of a floating window with a hotkey. It’s great for keeping notes or a terminal at the ready, available in any workspace. It turns out that it’s easy to add a similar feature to tmux. Here’s my...
Today is the 226th anniversary of Oktoberfest, a holiday which began as a city-wide celebration of the marriage of a royal couple. Raise a glass! I wish I liked beer more.In an interesting juxtaposition of holidays, today is also the real Columbus Day and also the federal holiday. Oktoberfest and Christopher...

On the most recent episode of the Waveform podcast, the hosts talk about two new announcements in the MMORPG world (relevant bit starts at 1:21 and goes on for 14 minutes): The context is this: RuneScape launched in 2001, and World of WarCraft in 2004, each game already had a “relaunch”: RuneScape via Old School...
Weekly cleaning and home improvement series, with some thoughts in between. Late/lazy start today. My bedtime routine has disappeared. I'm getting into bed after 2:00. I've stopped listening to records before bed and I think the knee injury also gave me an excuse to not be on top of hygiene stuff. So I want to get...
I literally just bought a new notebook to replace the near-full battered Moleskine that permanently lives in my back pocket. Then I saw this! The lines are watermarked, not printed so they basically are invisible! One of those ridiculously simple solutions that you wonder why no-one thought of it before. £62 whole...
Introduction An occasional collection of things I've recently found on the Internet and added to my bookmarks. DHH Is Way Worse Than I Thought While a year old at the point of saving this, it's still a pretty good collection of details of problematic things related to DHH. It's only got worse since. Awesome Steam...
2026-10-12Hello! I hate the color in this image! Why do museums and exhibitions have such awful lighting? To my untrained eye, the color of this beige machine looks ugly. In person, it was fine. In the end, I caved and let a preset do the work of recoloring this image. And the display! Modern displays have advanced so...
For my piece on Catholic miracle apologetics, I read (correction: skimmed) a 25,000-word post by rationalist blogger Scott Alexander. My piece, which cited (but does not focus on) his, ended up being a cool 2,700 words. I don't think it would benefit from being longer, and it was the result of me cutting around 70%...
This is an excerpt from my journal in which I comment on creativity. How do you write when you have nothing to convey? What is the first word that comes to mind? Which phrases follow from there to form a paragraph? Is there a wider point you are making? Are you effective at communicating it? Writing is as much as...
I wrote the chapter on app icon history for The iOS App Icon Book. The other day I found an old note stashed away where I had started researching the macOS version of that chapter (which Michael ultimately ended up writing). At the time, I didn’t know what to write. I mean, how do you write a history of icon design...
October 2026. Glynde. East Sussex. We didn’t actually make it up the hill to the opera house at Glyndebourne; blame it on my dodgy leg or Mrs RM’s dodgy foot, whatever. But we made it as far as Glynde Place (I’m a bit confused by all the Glyndes to be honest), which you can peep into from the graveyard of the parish...
I mentioned in my last post that I’m working my way through Practical Deep Learning by Ronald Kneusel. The math so far has been straightforward, and the code is written in Python, which I find easy to follow. “Easy to follow” does not mean “correct” or “to my liking.” Some of the code in the book simply doesn’t...
https://bubbles.town/static/bubbles_1200x630.png While reading 6 Months of Bubbles by Gordon, I started wondering to myself how I'd change bubbles to make it easier to discover fresher and more niche content, while still providing the "best" posts for easy reading. Here's how Gordon put it: I want eclectic, quirky,...
heya! every now and then, I'll see a post complaining about how narrow the focus of the small/indie web is. today, that was this post, by Yunzi, where they talk about non-tech topics being absent from the indie web... using kagi small web search results as an example. despite the name, kagi small web is in no way...

I’ve made something today to help me use my phone less. It’s a little background for my lock screen. Here is how it looks. And boy, it’s effective! I tend to pick up my phone so often, to do simple searches or to read Mastodon, it’s ridiculous! I even do it when I have my laptop in my lap! I want to remind myself...
Back in August I mentioned the new curl performance tests we have running. I figured it could be apt to return to this topic just to mention some of the initial outcomes. When the team gets a new set of charts, graphs and plots that visualize something, like performance, they offer an excellent opportunity for us to...
.minimalize { background-color: #fcd709; outline: none; border: none; padding: 10px 20px; font-size: 24px; border-radius: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px; } Every once in awhile, I see a beautiful, minimalist blog with impeccable typography, like this one from Manuel Moreale, and think I should do something similar with...
