I started speedrunning Minecraft a while ago. It’s an interesting niche with many tutorials and a helpful community, so all the information you need is freely available. But I used to struggle a lot, because it wasn’t clear to me how to learn to execute this stuff – partially because my hand-eye coordination and...
2026-10-13Back doing some interior decoration at home...Hello! I'm glad I didn't go out and buy a salt lamp. For starters, there's many plastic imitations of the salt lamp that don't give the same colored glow that a real salt lamp would. If I'm going to lean into the aesthetic of bright rock, I should do it...
New links… “Collecting is a game, but what kind of game? It is an imperfect information game of acquisition” — a theory of collecting, from Steven Hales “A general human tendency: to overestimate how far we have come in the progress of human knowledge” — a lengthy interview with Thomas Nagel “Many couples do not...
Quick one today. A lovely reader sent me a bug report with this pic: They told me they saw this in NetNewsWire (NNW) so I dug into the issue queue and found this thread. I don’t remember how I came to have
in my template, but I do remember that the XML style wrapping of title text...
The hands have been pulled out of all the clocks in the world.—Tristan TzaraGrains et IssuesThe clocks wait, naked. Hands left late last night. Now vacant time can’t name later or now.Your floor is too orderly—black squares, whiteoblongs stare back with evil smiles to spiteloose clocks. You’re naked and your...
A Few Minutes, Week After Week mtift Tue, 10/13/2026 - 05:15 For many years, I’ve led meditation groups in various settings. People come for a while, then stop coming. For instance, earlier this year, a colleague and I started a daily meditation group called the “Daily Reset.” I personally found it to be a nice break...
A couple of days ago, thanks to some free time on a Sunday afternoon, I got round to setting up my newly acquired Steam Machine. While I don't have a lot to say about it, I thought I'd note here that the event happened and jot some notes about how it went. On unboxing, two things struck me: just how small it is,...
This morning the two furry boys wanted attention at 5am. So here I am. Was sitting with them and they routinely attack each other until their energy depletes. Then they go to food and water. Energy back. Attack. After I figure 45 minutes they are fully baked and need time to lay awhile. It never lasts of course....
Consider a story like Ghibli's Spirited Away. Chihiro is thrown into a supernatural world dominated by cruelty and injustice, but she doesn't defeat it by hoarding magical power-ups until she's strong enough to punch Yubaba in the face. She wins because she's brave and clever and empathic enough to make friends and...
In the hours following the release of CVE-2026-92392 for the project curl, site reliability workers and systems administrators scrambled to desperately rebuild and patch all their systems to fix a use-after-free in HTTP/2 upload retries where cleanup turns leftover upload data into a new request and leaves a pointer...
Whenever philosophers sit around trying to figure out what it actually means to be a “good person,” they always muddy the waters with impossible standards. They talk about altruism, radical empathy, and walking fifty miles in someone else’s orthopedic shoes to understand their pain. Who has time for that? I have...
One thing that might be fun to add to the ⌘1/2/3 tab post is this: while ⌘1–8 select tabs from the left, ⌘9 doesn’t jump to the ninth tab, but to the last tab: I think it’s thoughtful – a recognition that both edges are important. (Previously we’ve seen Bear understanding that, too.) Why not ⌘0, though? Sure, you...
Tor and Onion addresses are one of those things that I feel like I have known about since forever. Still, I never really understood how the Tor Project worked, both organisationally and technically. It is thanks to Avoiding the Internet Achilles’ heel: locking the web open with Onion Services at the Internet Archive...
When a group of former childhood friends reconnect, their reunion takes a wild turn as they stumble upon a dangerous international plot—and must save the world. Remember how we used to play with Matchboxes as kids? Well now let’s steal that nuclear bomb and save the world. I was expecting something completely...
Yesterday was the first day of the onground intensive for the TEEM program. We'll spend the first two days of the week learning about Lutheran Liturgy, then a Wednesday workshop on Lutheran polity, and we'll finish with a class on Old Testament prophets. We begin each day with worship/devotion time at 8, and we go...
Last month I raced what has now become traditionally my last race of the season: Ironman 70.3 Washington Tri-Cities, in Richland, Washington. My primary goal for this race was simple: finish my season strong. If I could finish this race faster than last year, that’d be a nice bonus, but I simply wanted to put a bow...
Friends were ribbing us when we said we were doing a bus tour of Yellowstone, but it’s impossible for me to feel shame about this. I love a good bus tour, and will happily do those Hop On Hop Off joints in any city without hesitation. I was expecting a large motorcoach for this all-day loop around the park, but...
Apple is selling the recently announced HomeView, an iPad mini glued to a speaker that serves as a hub for the home, with a chaotic commercial in which a family runs over for breakfast. I can’t remember any other company commercial that causes anxiety and contempt for the product.

Tarmac vs. treadmillIt's getting colder here. That makes running outside slightly less appealing. Nuwani and I had been talking about joining a gym for the winter so we could keep up our weekly running habit, and today, we did. We didn't want to sink a lot of money into this. Really, all we needed was access to a...
High profile bloggers return to X. A new CEO, a different algorithm, and a whining “but it’s where the action is?”. So it’s ok to be in the platform run by a sociopathic Nazi as long as you aren’t SEEING the right wing hatred? Have I got that right? And hey all the interesting stuff is there anyway, so what’s the...
The vibePretty worn out, honestly. I have wanted to keep things moving, but I have been tired enough that it is hard to ignore. Getting away from the desk for a while helped.Highlights🤝 I found Buildside at the start of the month, and I have spent more time there as I get used to being a solo builder. I am still...

A couple of months ago Jim Highsmith explained how practitioners writing for each other forms a distinct style of writing. He now adds a section to the article with more detail on the craft of how we write in this style. How the writer shows up in the prose, its four principles, the role of story, how to sensibly...
I have been looking for a network protocol stack that can be run in addition to the regular TCP/IP network at TVC. Kiran has been exploring Meshtastic, mainly to connect the sensors to the Home Assistant that TVC runs. We have very poor cell phone connection and two BSNL wired internet connections, one of which is...
There is a certain residence in Cobble Hill, Brooklyn, right on the border with Carroll Gardens, which regularly displays large inflatable holiday and seasonal decorations. As far as holidays go, we have covered in these pages its offerings for Mother’s Day, Valentine’s Day, Independence Day, Easter and St....
On Friday October 9th, German journalist Gavin Karlmeier released the latest episode of his podcast “Haken dran” and shared an exclusive scoop: an anonymous source discovered that the social media company W Social is publishing to the world wide web the legal names, nationalities and approximate dates of birth of...
This is our paradox: We know that uncertainty is the substrate of the universe, is the crucible of creativity, is the path to truth, and yet we spend our lives searching for certainty. The word auspicious derives from the Latin auspex — one who examines the flight of birds for omens and divinations of the future....
In the curl 8.23.0 release we shipped a fix for one of the worst vulnerabilities in curl in a long time. We grade it severity HIGH. It is known as CVE-2026-92392 with the title HTTP/2 upload Use-After-Free. This post explains the bug, what the problem can lead to, and something about why it happened and what we have...
After the masterpiece that is Outer Wilds, I wanted to chill for a moment, and what a better way to do so than by going through a detective story! Famicom Detective Club is a pretty niche series by Nintendo, with only a couple games that were only on the NES—though recently remade for Nintendo Switch. Emio The...
I’ve bought one of those digital picture frame, and I added the picture folders that I’ve sorted through to it. When my husband and I were watching the slideshow, this picture came up, and I sighed, “I thought I’d already sorted these, but boy, it needs another pass!” We both laughed, and continued to watch the...
I spent a week creating a new deflate implementation from scratch in C named tugz to provide an Info-ZIP-compatible zip program for w64devkit 2.10.1 (released today). I also replaced busybox-w32’s deflate-based unzip, gzip, gunzip, and zcat apps as well. My new deflate performs better than zlib but worse than...
I mainly listen to albums, or LPs as they used to be called. Not playlists. I love albums! Loads of amazing albums get released each year, so why does Spotify make it so hard to discover them? To find new albums in Spotify I have to go to Seach > Music > New Releases, scroll down to "Hand-picked new releases" and...
I bought a lamp from the UK, and it came with this plug… … which turns out to be a normal EU plug inside an adapter. Which is nice, but I’ve never seen this solution before. This adapter looks sturdy, but still so… janky. Is this normal?
I need to publish 26 more blog posts before November 11th to reach my goal of 100 posts in one year. This is my second time doing the 100 Days To Offload challenge. I've had some long dry spells in writing over the past year, but it the challenge has definitely helped motivate me to write more than I probably would...
Ecliptic Mariner: Diaries is something a bit new for the lab - a video game, built in an engine. As most of you know, we’ve built a few game-like and toy like things here in the lab, but I’ve never actually set out to make a “video” game (we’ll see why I use those quotes in a moment), let alone one built on someone...
Robert Birming wrote about a /photo page. And I like that idea. Just a photo, of something. And every now and then, update it.

Apple introduced a few new things this morning centered around home use. Updated products are mostly predictable updates with slight price hikes after the existing ones over the summer. The star of the show is the new $299 HomeView, the long-rumored stationary home gadget: Apple today introduced Apple HomeView,...

This is a collection of comments I have made in the context of private exchanges. I have already written about most of these in previous entries, though here I piece everything together into a more complete view of the case. This is an extensive analysis of political trends in Europe and the West at-large, with...
Since its acquisition by Elon Musk in 2022, Twitter/X has been considered a neighbourhood on the wrong side of the tracks. But not any more. Things have changed. Now it’s the place to be. Because, among other things, the platform is “cheerful” and “inclusive”. So say some people. But the question is vexed, the...
October 2026. Off to west Folkestone (or possibly Hythe) for a penultimate Kent GBG27 tick, and a little stretch of coast I knew nothing about. We start our descent to the Fountain at the serene military cemetery next to Shorncliffe Army Camp. This is a busy bit of OS map. Place names to conjure with; Shorncliffe,...
