One of the pleasures of my boyhood was going round to my grandmother's flat to watch TV (we didn't have a set at home at the time). On Saturday afternoons my brother and I would join her to watch the wrestling (Kent Walton ringside), and on weekend evenings there would be such delights as Danger Man, starring the...
So let's make it even more difficult, shall we? When I first saw the Top 9 anime that shaped who I am thing on bsky a few weeks back my thought process was "9 shows? Easy"...but then I realized I was leaving out movies. The more I thought about movies, the more I realized I was leaving out OVAs...and shit, dude -...
An 11-minute video from MattKC documenting huge effort to revive a backup tape from a 2000 game Frogger 2: Swampy’s Revenge: This is a pretty harrowing story of restoration, including an extremely obscure backup tape made by a short-lived Dutch company, attempts to reverse engineer a poorly documented data format, a...
KDE’s 30 years anniversary is today (14th), with the release of Plasma 6.8 as part of celebrations. Of all the desktop environments for Linux, Plasma is what I like the most. I hope to one day use it on a “daily driver” computer. Curiosity: the email from Matthias Ettrich announcing the “Kool Desktop Environment” in...
I remember attending one of these last year… it was probably my first ever IndieWeb event?! I worked on building what is now my main Internet home, BurgeonLab. I enjoyed the show-and-tell aspect (much like the two IndieWebCamps I’ve attended remotely). It’s in the middle of the night though for me, but I’ll try...
I’ve been writing my newsletter for 9.5 years now. This thing has had the same format since 2017 and has really been my consistent “thing” through marriage, moving cross-country, a pandemic, having kids, changing companies, and so on. It’s definitely a labor of love. I’ve lost quite a bit of sleep on it over the...
The American director, whose credits include Boyhood, and the Before trilogy, began filming Merrily We Roll Along in 2019. The story spans twenty years, and Linklater wants the characters, portrayed by Paul Mescal, Beanie Feldstein, and Ben Platt, to be seen ageing over this time. He has to be commended for not...
A song that reminds you of a particular friend. I’ve known this person since I was 15. I met her through a mutual friend. We are still friends today and have been through the full gamut of life experiences. Ohh and for a while we were married. Louise and I met as teenagers, married at 21, and have now been divorced...

October 14, 2026 It always tugs at my heartstrings when I see an injured animal. This morning, we discovered an injured yearling deer in the yard with both front legs broken. When I went over to check her out, she just calmly stared at me, which surprised me. Usually, when an injured animal sees a human, it will...
Someone emailed recently to tell me that they like the idea of Pure Blog, but they thought the admin interface was "really ugly" so they can't use it. Fair enough - beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all that, but I don't think that was a fair evaluation of Pure Blog's admin UI. When I built Pure Blog, I...
Apple finally announced a thing: HomeView. Immediately I was surprised at the pricing, given that Apple is now charging the same for a streaming box. I have an old iPad in the kitchen, as well as a HomePod, so slamming them into each other makes sense. More space-efficient and better looking. But then I thought...
[ The stream will be recorded. You can watch it later. ] In a couple of hours I will resume the work I am doing on my Emacs denote package. There are general refinements I wish to make, but also to continue iterating on the new denote-data-mode, which is an optional in-memory cache for Denote. I will have the chat...
Sarà una sensazione, sarà la mia bolla, saranno gli insperati successi al botteghino dopo che le sale cinematografiche parevano morte, ma da Obsession a questa parte ho la sensazione che l'horror stia vivendo un ottimo momento...
Bear with me while I wax poetic. I know, I know. Not my usual style. Still, we’re all friends, so humor me for a moment. Have you ever felt such a strong sense of déjà vu that you wondered how you could possibly remember something you never actually experienced? I get this feeling a lot. It’s a strange sort of...
If your man Peter is right here, and these numbers are from Companies House so I presume they are, then the average salary at OpenAI is over £2.3 million! 🤯This is complete madness, but it’s the gold rush to end all gold rushes so I guess they’re throwing everything at hiring all the people they believe can make...
The Lost Art of Idleness One of the problems with the pocket supercomputers that we all carry around is that they've killed the simple act of being idle. Many years ago, we had a basement. In that basement I had a real stereo system with a 5 speaker system that was perfectly balanced to my spot on the couch. Not...
“Papa? Was wäre, wenn alles auf der Welt weiß wäre?”“Hm, was meinst du, was dann wäre?”“Dann wäre alles weiß. Alle Dinge und man selbst auch. Der Arm, die Haut. Einfach alles. Alles wäre dann in Mond gekleidet.” (Zu-Bett-geh-Unterhaltungen, deren poetischen Turn man am Ende so nicht erwartet hat.) Per E-Mail antworten
The Philosophy in an Inclusive Key Summer Institutes (PIKSI) in Boston aim to “broaden inclusion within professional philosophy.” In part because such efforts are currently unpopular with the powers that be, its primary funding, from MIT and Harvard, has been cut. To cope with the cuts, its organizers say that “it...
Stream of consciousness rambles that beat screaming into a pillow. (Though I might do that after this.) For the past weeks, I've been sleeping later (around 2:00) and waking up at 9:30. I get out of bed around 11:00. If I'm lucky, I'll eat breakfast and continue on with my day. If I'm not, I'll be riddled with an...
The book Impro by Keith Johnstone is described as a ‘landmark work’ by the blurb on the back of my copy. It describes techniques and exercises he developed for theatrical improvisation classes he ran. Notes There’s a lot in this book, too much to summarise easily. But some of the points that stood out most to me...
2026-10-14Hello!I was considering writing the twist at the end, but I'll be direct: I lost my media card on the way home from New York. This was a photography festival, and the main highlight for me (besides talking with the vendors in the street fair booths) was some free time with modern cameras and lenses. What...
This September, my wife and I started viewing houses to buy for our first home. This’s been a long time coming—for the past 5 years, we’ve been saving aggressively and safely investing our savings in index funds, which have performed remarkably well. We genuinely thought it’d take us at least a few months to find a...
Driving in India, in the major cities is a hell-like experience. Civic sense spills over on the streets, and that leads to endless traffic jams with everyone trying to squeeze themselves into the queue. It’s always a stressful experience. It’s why I choose to drive to work once a week, maybe twice if I’m up and out...
Last week I attended the 9th E.DSO – EE-ISAC - ENCS – ENISA Cybersecurity Forum in Brussels. And as I had nothing to present, I tried to make myself useful by writing up an apparently well read live-blog (better version below!). At this conference, hashtag #CyberGrids26, all relevant people were present. Regulators,...
Above? The Overlook for Grand Prismatic, the largest hot spring in the States. This was the first upward hike on the trip where I questioned my fitness more than once. But folks were doing it with babies in backpacks so I minimized complaint. Earlier that morning we did the free tour of the Old Faithful Inn and...

October 2026. Rye. East Sussex. We’d been down in Rye a whole fortnight (bar the bi-weekly trips to attend to elderly parents), so about time we left the harbour, and actually visited the town, I guess. You’d think we’d have visited all the pubs, cafes, museums and twee shops in Rye already (I even bought my suit...
Mood: Ready to parry. Snap-hiss. It is arguably the most recognized sound effect in cinema history. Ben Burtt, the genius sound designer for Star Wars, created it by recording the idle motor of an old movie projector and mixing it with the electromagnetic hum of a television picture tube. To most people, that sound...
Over the last year or so, multiple engineers at Aisle have spent a lot of time and energy while pointing their AI powered tooling at the curl source code. This has resulted in no less than thirty-five published curl vulnerabilities and CVE Ids. Today, we make Aisle’s audit report available on the curl website. Yet...
I've just bumped Rogallo to v3.2.0. This release has one small new feature and one wee bug fix. The new feature is something I found myself wanting a short while ago. I was copying some URIs and then turning them back into Gemtext links in another document; after doing that a few times, I realised that it might be...
For years, I've been going back and forth on whether or not I should save up and get an e-reader. I've been able to happily give up on that dream with the help of a matte screen protector + greyscale mode + the Cantook app. Cantook's interface is simple and very customizable. I can change the text's size, colour and...
Gremlin and I were discussing the art of housecleaning, which Gremlin admits never explicitly learning. I (being A Girl) was explicitly taught, but later in life I learned that a lot of the things I was taught were inefficient or just plain wrong. So I had to unlearn and relearn how to clean my house. Gremlin,...

Once I get going it always seems like I got something more to say. The blog now is this place for me to record. The journal gets me going. Writing the blog lets me feel the nature of this unfinished story. How today it crossed over on itself and I had to go to Muni Coffee. So here I sit. I have not been in awhile....
Today I learned more about fonts and found one great one to replace my current setup and pair with my colour palette. Maple Mono is an excellent monospace font with a rounded design and smart ligatures. After testing it on terminal and my code editor (both using Catppuccin Mocha), it worked great together, the soft,...
Building a slide template starts with three foundational choices — colours, fonts and layouts. Sumeet Gayathri Moghe covers the basics of color theory and how to build a reusable palette, the essentials of typography, including serif, sans-serif, handwritten and monospace fonts, plus the finer points of kerning and...
So this last weekend a bunch of us gathered in a cabin in central Wisconsin to record another season of The Meatgrinder. Now, I know you're saying "Trae, you guys haven't released Season 6 yet, but you recorded Season 7 already?" And yeah, that's the situation. Season 6 will be coming out soon though, so don't...
I'm not sure what I can say about this. I talked about how much I wished cash would come back. It seems as though people are returning to cash now, in a shocking twist of fate. The Government of India has imposed a Merchant Discount Rate on transfers over 2000 INR (21 USD or roughly 16 GBP). This fee requires all...
As a somewhat popular blogger, plenty of random stuff is sent to me via email from people that want me to try stuff out. To be honest though, a lot of the time bots keep spamming services and tools that nobody cares about. This makes surfacing what’s actually good from all a bit annoying to sort out. Therefore, I am...
